When you are in Baghdad, you are in one of the safest areas of Iraq. It was the first area entered by the United States armed forces, and has one of the largest collections of doctors in Iraq.
In fact, Baghdad has the best hospitals that Iraq has to offer.
Baghdad has over a dozen public hospitals. These public hospitals are open at all hours, so if you need a doctor right away you can get to one. There are also several military hospitals which are only open to you if military personnel bring you to one. Civilian hospitals are all clean, and well-lit. They may or may not be air-conditioned, however, you will always be seen by a doctor based on how urgent your case is. If your leg needs to be cut off, you will be seen right away. However, if you have a less pressing issue such as stomach ache, you may be better off finding a local doctor. There are plenty of doctors that see patients in small neighborhood clinics. These doctors are usually self-trained or taught by another doctor. However, they are able to solve nearly any minor medical issue that you are facing.
Depending on your issue, it may be better off to call the local emergency number in Iraq. You should consult with your hotel or hostel as to what the emergency number is for the area in which you will be staying, as it varies throughout Iraq. A call to the emergency number will allow police and other emergency services to reach you quickly, much like a call to 911 would do in the United States. However, if you are unsure about finding a doctor, get a car ride or taxi to the nearest hospital. Every hospital will treat you as best they can, no matter what may be going on.
Make sure you leave as much time to find a doctor as possible. Health care in Baghdad and Iraq in general is still being developed. More doctors are becoming certified each day, however, you should leave as much time as possible to receive the best treatment that you can.
